Planned Temporary Closure at Skyline Rotorua

The entire Skyline Rotorua site will be closed from Monday 2 September to Wednesday 4 September 2024 to enable the maintenance of the 1817-metre-long Gondola haul rope and four inverter drive units that control the motors – a process that is undertaken every few years.

Maintenance teams undertake regular daily, weekly and monthly maintenance after-hours but from time to time it’s necessary to do more extensive work that cannot be completed overnight – this is one of those occasions.

Our engineers, with assistance from Doppelmayr NZ and Austria, and Fatzer AG Switzerland, have been planning for scheduled maintenance for the past year. They’ll be working hard to get it done right and as quickly as possible so people can get back up the mountain by Thursday 5 September.

All facilities and activities at Skyline Rotorua will be closed during the closure, including the Luge, Stratosfare Restaurant, Shops, Volcanic Hills Tasting Room and the Mountain Bike Park.

We’ve been working with industry partners, Rotorua tourism operators and local accommodation providers to help ensure manuhiri are well-informed about the closure.

If locals or other visitors have any questions about the closure and when they can get in some Skyline fun, they’re encouraged to read the FAQ’s below.

Gondola Shut Down FAQs

September is typically our quiet season with fewer visitors. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are also our quietest days compared to later in the week and over the weekend. We also wanted to choose a date far enough in advance, so people have enough time to change their plans.

We will be tightening the Gondola haul rope and completing general maintenance works of the Gondola cabins. These works are critical to ensuring people can continue to get up and down the mountain safely. We’ll also be doing some other maintenance work on our other activities and infrastructure while we’re closed.

To complete these works the Gondolas will need to be taken off the haul rope. We simply can’t complete these works without shutting down the Gondola, which means people can’t get up and down the mountain.

We have decided to close the entire facility so we can complete these works safely, and much sooner than if we kept the facility open. We’re also completing maintenance across the entire site, making the most of having no visitors up the mountain.

With the Gondola closed, people cannot get up the mountain safely. Because of this, the entire facility needs to close.

The last time we completed similar works was in August 2021. Long-scheduled maintenance is part of the life cycle of the Gondola installed in 2005.

Most definitely. We undertake regular daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance all after hours, but from time to time it’s necessary to undertake more extensive work which cannot be completed in an overnight timeframe.

Unfortunately, we will be closed during this time and sadly won’t be able to host you over these three days. We expect to be open again by Thursday 5 September, later that week, we hope this might work with your plans. Otherwise, we do apologise for this inconvenience and really look forward to seeing you again another time.

Yes, you will, unfortunately. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please contact Stratosphere to rebook.

The mountain bike tracks will need to be closed during these works. There will not be any access up the mountain during these works, except for our maintenance teams.

There are a whole heap of activities you can do on your next visit to Rotorua. Make sure you check out the I-Site to find out what’s available. And if you’re still around, make sure you come visit us once the works are complete.
