40 Years of Fun
Skyline Rotorua celebrates 40 years of adventure, community connection, and unforgettable memories with locals and visitors.
Skyline Rotorua Through the Years
Skyline Rotorua’s 40 Years of Fun began in 1981 when Hylton Hensman purchased land on the side of Mt Ngongotahā, setting the stage for what would become one of Rotorua’s most iconic attractions. With Skyline Enterprises looking to expand its South Island success, the location was seen as the perfect opportunity for a new tourism venture here in Rotorua. Construction began in 1984, with a $3 million investment bringing in a Swiss-engineered Mueller Gondola system, a 250-seat restaurant, and the world’s first-ever Luge, an innovative gravity-powered ride that would define the Skyline experience. On 9 March 1985, Skyline Skyrides Rotorua officially opened its doors, marking the beginning of an era of adventure, hospitality, and breathtaking views. Over the past 40 years, Skyline Rotorua has welcomed over 12 million visitors, growing into a must-visit destination that has contributed significantly to the local economy and community. As it celebrates this milestone in 2025, Skyline Rotorua not only honours its rich history but also looks ahead with excitement, continuing to create unforgettable experiences for generations to come.
